The associative psychological theory, which is one of the primary theories of memory, gained special development in the 18th – 19th centuries. This theory has not lost its relevance even today. According to this theory, the memory of student musicians is a two‐component complex system related to the accumulation and reproduction of information. It is based on long‐term or short‐term associations (connections) by contrast, contiguity, similarity, spatial and temporal proximity. However, the interpretation of the essence of the memory of student musicians according to the "stimulus‐reaction" type creates limitations in judgments about mnemonic processes. That is why there is a need to substantiate the essence of the musical memory of students of arts faculties and reveal the specifics of its work in the process of instrumental training. The article uses theoretical methods that corresponded to the nature of the phenomenon, in particular: comparative analysis of scientific research on the specified topic; modeling the ideas of psychological research into the theory and methodology of music education; summarizing the best experience of music teachers, etc. The methodological basis of the study was the associative theory of personal memory and the information‐cybernetic theory. The essence of the concept of "musical memory of students of arts faculties" is substantiated from the standpoint of the specified theories. It means a complex two‐component memory system that, in the process of their instrumental training, ensures the memorization and reproduction of the sheet music of musical works due to the short‐term or long‐term interaction of associations (in terms of content, similarity , contrast, contiguity, temporal and spatial proximity). As the musical memory of students of arts faculties from the standpoint of the information‐cybernetic theory of memory is a complex three‐component psychological system, which in the process of instrumental training of future specialists ensures the recognition of the signs of the musical text of musical works by receptors of the sensory register, the processing of perceived information occurs in short‐term memory, the preservation of memorized information happens in long‐term memory.
