The article is devoted to the analysis of scientific and pedagogical ideas of the outstanding British theorist in the field of adult and continuing education, the professor of Surrey University (UK) Peter Jarvis. His progressive scientific researches in this direction started in the 70-s of the XXth century in the period of active scientific discussion concerning understanding and substantiation of adult education. The researcher draws the attention to a number of synonymic terms widely used not only in Great Britain but in the world education circles in general. It has been found out that adult education is viewed by the author as any kind of learning which involves socially mature personalities. So the author accepts a rather wide interpretation of the concept not separating formal and non-formal education. P. Jarvis insists on the exceptional role of traditional adult education – general cultural development – which was historically the foundation of out-of-school education and at the present is the basis of learning society concept, where a person takes part in education for self-development and self-improvement. It has been revealed that the main aim of adult education as a lifelong process from the point of view of P. Jarvis is to turn the whole humanity into a learning society. At that time that idea sounded futuristic and unreal but the author insisted that rapidly developing technologies would greatly contribute to its realization. The main features of learning society have been determined: meeting the educational demands of learners, giving free access to education (all forms and types), flexibility of educational system to turn learning into a lifelong process. The research outlines the prospect of further investigations based on the huge scientific outcome of Peter Jarvis and also deeper analysis of other British founders of the theory of adult education.
