The article examines the theoretical and practical foundations of forming the environmental competence of primary school students through extracurricular club activities. The relevance of the topic is determined by the reorientation of modern primary education toward a competency-based approach, the need to foster a responsible attitude toward the environment, and the search for effective forms of environmental education. The purpose of the article is to provide a theoretical substantiation of the pedagogical potential of extracurricular club activities in the formation of environmental competence in younger schoolchildren and to identify its content-related, organizational, and methodological possibilities. The study employed theoretical and empirical research methods. The essence of the concept of “environmental competence of younger schoolchildren” was clarified and considered as the ability of students to apply environmental knowledge to explain environmental phenomena, make well-grounded decisions, and solve environmental problems in everyday life. It was determined that its structure includes cognitive, emotional-value, and activity-practical components. The ascertaining experiment revealed a predominantly average level of environmental competence formation, which confirmed the need to search for effective pedagogical means of its development. It was substantiated that extracurricular club activities are an effective form of integrating knowledge, values, and practical experience, as well as a space for partnership interaction among teachers, students, and parents. The content and methodology of implementing the “EcoWorld” club program were disclosed; the program included excursions, observations, research and practical activities, interactive case analysis, roleplaying and simulation games, project-based activities, STEM experiments, and joint environmental projects with parents. The intermediate results of the formative stage of the experiment demonstrated positive dynamics in the development of all components of environmental competence, in particular an increase in the proportion of students with high and average levels and a significant decrease in the number of schoolchildren with a low level. The practical significance of the article lies in the development and testing of methodological tools for club work that can be used in primary school practice.
