dc.description.abstractДосліджуючи візантійську естетику аскетизма й естетосферу аскетичної культури, автор статті прагне здійснити загальний аналіз теологічної теорії символу та практики використання символіки в різних царинах життя аскетів. Знаково-символічний вимір аскетичної культури Візантії вражає своєю масштабністю: сакрально-художня образність символічного характеру тут утверджується не лише в богослужінні або в богословському дискурсі, але й у благочестивому побуті, в чому переконує, зокрема, вивчення візантійської чернечої культури.uk_UA
dc.description.abstractThe aim of the article is to analyse both theological theory of symbols and practice of usage of symbols in different spheres of ascetics’ life in the context of studying of Byzantine aesthetics of the asceticism. The methods. Using the scientific methods of generalization, systematization, hermeneutical analysis of cultural traditions, the author studies the phenomenon of symbolism in ascetic (first of all, monastic) culture of Byzantium. The main conclusions. The adequate understanding of Byzantine ascetic and aesthetical doctrine is impossible without exploration of the semiosphere (province of symbols) as constituent part of the ascetic culture aesthetosphere (province of religious and aesthetical values). Study of the latter proves, that symbolism plays an important role in development of ascetic culture of Byzantium. One can meet numerous symbols not only in church-service texts or theological discourse, but also in different daily practices, for example, in practice of making and wearing of the special monastic clothes (mantle, skin belt, etc.). Such things perform not only the utilitarian function, but also function of identification, function of commemoration (reminder) and religious and didactic function in particular. Besides, symbolism can be used effectively by Byzantine ascetics in practice of control over the community of monks. Analysis of description of famous ascetic saint Pachomiy the Great’s acts convinces us in that. As biographer of Pachomiy tells, God through His Angel sends to this saint the rules of monastic life. Following the advice of Lord’s Envoy, Pachomiy begins to use the letters of Greek alphabet in management of ascetic acts of his numerous brothers in Christ. It is worth mention, that in Pachomiy’s monastery the letter ξ, which has the pompous form, should secretly mark monks with naughty and cool temper. At the same time, the letter ι is used as the symbol of obedient and meek ascetics. So, in this semiosystem the form of letters expresses the features of monks’ character. This practice helps st. Pachomiy to manage the ascetics’ community and to correct the way of his brothers’ life successfully.uk_UA
